Out of print since 2007, the award-winning history of Birmingham, Alabama's extensive railroad district is now available as a softcover reprint.

"Birmingham Rails, The Last Golden Era" covers Birmingham's railroads in the colorful post-World War II era, during the transition from steam to diesel motive power at the peak of post-war rail passenger service. The reprint contains all 280 pages of the original edition, with more than 400 color and black & white photographs taken by many of the best photographers of the period. Twelve chapters cover the history and operations of every Class I, industrial, and short line railroad in the Birmingham District. Entertaining and informative commentary by veteran railroaders tell what is was like to work for the railroad during a time of transition from steam to diesel motive power. A retrospective "before and after" section illustrates the dramatic changes to the district's railroad landscape over five decades.  Rounding out the content, a series of detailed map panels from 1935 provide a perspective of featured locations throughout the Birmingham District.

The softcover is printed on coated gloss paper with laminated covers. All images have been digitally remastered for sharper detail and greater color depth. A very limited number of copies are now available for $69.00 with free first class shipping.

Birmingham Rails, The Last Golden Era

Final review is a long time in the future, I’ll not rush through this. Very well organized, excellent subject matter, published by railroad guys for railroad guys ( and gals), high quality construction.
