"Great Temple of Travel" is the first book-length history of Birmingham, Alabama's once iconic Terminal Station and the railroads it served. More than 200 photographs illustrate the station's colorful history, from its opening in 1909 as the finest railway terminal in the New South, to its demise in 1969 after decades of decline in rail passenger service.
The book’s seven chapters detail the station’s construction and operation, including a capsuled history of each of the five passenger railroads it served. Dozens of color and black & white photographs illustrate trains operated by Southern, Seaboard Air Line, Frisco, Central of Georgia, and Illinois Central railroads. Numerous drawings and illustrations detail the station and passenger train routes to and from the station.
